In Order to Get Noticed...
I was a marketing major. I believe I know a lot about what people like, and what sells. Therefore, one would think that I should be able to attract attention to my Blog. The comments that I would then receive would probably cause me to be better about posting. And then I'd get more comments. And so on, and so on, and so on.
Therefore, I will post a number of blurbs about things that interest me, and hopefully this thing has some kind of search service to help other people who are interested in those things find me.
1. Dungeons and Dragons - I've always loved the concept of the game, though I've had mixed playing results. 99% of my experience was in high school, where I had an excellent dungeon master but unfortunately, the guys who became part of our game were mostly lame-os who basically just wanted to stomp around and kill everything that moved. Recently my nephew has begun to play D&D 3.5, with which I have no familiarity, though I can't imagine that the basic concepts have changed. Further, my brother Doug has begun to fancy himself as a DM, and after playing one short round, I know he has the ability and knack for it - (IF HE'D EVER PLAY)! I think there is a real art to making this game fun, and most who consider it for nerds or geeks only have either: a) not played, or b) not played with a DM or group who are any good at it.
2. Heroclix - this hobby bit me on the ass and held on for dear life. I have all the "nons" and probably 75% of the Uniques, with about 40% of the Limited Editions. I'm already tired of it (as a game, I don't find it very fun, and as a hobby, it's frustrating because the company is trying SOOO hard to make money that it's nearly impossible to be a mega-collector. So my choices are several - wait for a few years to see what happens, or sell everything but the Uniques, which are the ones I'm really into, and try for that whole set, or just get out altogether (unlikely). We'll see.
3. Comic books - now this I love. I was an avid collector in high school, then have collected sporadically since, with a currently nice-sized collection of about 5000 or so. This is my favorite hobby because I have a consignment service that I trade with, so when I'm tired of collecting a title, I can send them all in and basically get credit on other comics.
4. Video games - Probably the hobby I can most count on for true entertainment. However, when I met my wife, video games were the first time-waster to go - she's not into them, so it's not something I want to play when she's around. Other times, like before she wakes up, etc., I could play, but they're usually too loud (who wants to play with the volume down, or with headphones? not me). To further complicate matters, my PS2 bit it a while back so I don't play that at all. I do play an occasional PC game (strategy games like Warcraft and such are my faves - sometimes I enjoy first person shooters like Quake, but no interest at all in the latest craze - the "reality games" like Worlds of Warcraft, the Sims, etc. Don't like driving games, either.) We'll see where this ends up when the PS3 comes out...
5. Camping - as a boy scout, I thought I'd had my fill, but have recently been camping with my wife, who loves it, and this will probably be our next big thing. I love the "nature" part of it, as well as the solitude.
6. Photography - I've always been a shutter-bug, and that tripled with digital cameras. Now I'm looking for the next step - a digital camera with the bells and whistles of a SLR with a really nice zoom and powerful flash.
7. Music - as in building the perfect collection. Thanks to the IPOD my wife gave me, I'm constantly working on building the ultimate mini-jukebox. This is probably my most fulfilling hobby.
8. Sex. Hey - sex sells! Remember - marketing major? I'll be interested to see what kind of hits I get if I put sex in my blog with a great level of frequency. Sex, sex, sex, sex, sex. Sexy, Sexist, Sex-mobile! Ok, enough of that.
All right - I guess I need to stop playing Blogger and get back to work - the thing that allows me to enjoy so many hobbies. However, before I go, I cannot neglect to mention (although already briefly alluded to in #s 4, 5, 7 and 8) my ultimate favorite hobby - my wife Cindy - and specifically, making her smile.

There is something of a search for people with like-minded interests. However, I never use it. If you setup your interests in your profile, people can link up with you there. The problem is that if you list something too general, you're likely to get mixed so much in the crowd that very few will see you. If you list something too specific, it's likely that nobody else has listed it and, therefore, don't match up. (It compares against a literal string. If you list "Dungeons & Dragons" it's different from "D&D." Misspellings cause problems, too.)
Something that I've noticed is that most bloggers that receive comments regularly have been at it for a few posts with no readers at all. They just write post after post and go looking for other blogs that they're interested in. If they make a comment on somebody else's blog, that person may look them up and make their own comment. (That happened in reverse for me. I was fortunate enough to have some people stumble upon my blog and I looked them up. Now we've got a community going.) Another thing that readers like is timely updating. You don't have to stick to a day-by-day schedule, but once every other day or once a week or something is kinda nice. I try to make a post every weekday, but sometimes I falter (today might be one of those days...)
That's just my two cents. I hope it helps.
(I'm trying to get something of a D&D game together. I'd like to set one up for a Saturday sometime, but I haven't researched the story yet.)

I'm just here for the sex-mobile. Bring on the sex-mobile!
Oh, God! You've done it now. You aren't going to leave MJ hanging without the sex-mobile, are you?
WOW!
At the end of this long day, I decided to slip over to Doug's Blog to see what was new. Following his kind post to mine showed SEVEN comments!!!
WOW!
Raza - you're right - too much in too little space. But I was on a role, so perhaps over the next few days I'll expand on some of the topics.
In short, to please everyone, I say:
My wife is not a hobby - she's a full time job. Which I absolutely love.
Heroclix does have similarities to Magic except they are little action figures in the shapes of all the Marvel and DC superheroes. You are supposed to battle with them, but the actual game is pretty lame. The figures, however, are cool.
As for the sex-mobile - I think we should all drive a sex-mobile. I strongly recommend that if you haven't yet "broken in" the wheels you currently drive, I challenge each and every one of you to do so by this time next week, and of course report back here with the play-by-play. Not too graphic though - we may have children and Tritias reading.
Again - THANKS FOR VISITING!!!
Ah! We're ever getting a more vivid picture of the mystery that is Razafraggin!
... I would comment on the amount of sex talk going on, but, considering how I'm related to many of the posters (and the blog owner,) I've said enough already.
I liked the X-Men comics, but felt that there was too much discussion. Sometimes I didn't want something so deep. (It's social commentary about prejudice and bigotry, after all.) Most of the time I was reading Spiderman. Simple and fun. "With great power comes great responsibility" was usually as deep as it got, and after hearing that for the thousandth time, I started to ignore it whenever it was said. I liked Batman because I liked the idea of a normal man becoming a superhero. I didn't like Superman (sorry Gregg) because it didn't seem like he had any equals. They described it best in Kill Bill Vol. 2 when Bill says that Superman's disguise is to look like the rest of us, while every other superhero's disguise is to become a superhero. Clark Kent, the weak, mild mannered human being, was Superman's view of humanity, while Bruce Wayne strove to become something more and he achieved it.
My musical preferences are all over the place. If it predates the 1900s, I mostly like baroque, but I also enjoy some of the classical composers. Copland is quite nice (and very American!) I'll also listen to some Green Day, Dido, and Evanescence. To top things off, I'll pop in a J-Pop CD every once in a while.
I've said too much for now. This post is beginning to look like a novel!
Raza - is all talk about sex "dirty"?
T - those comics do NOT have to be "perfect" to be worth a lot. If they are "near perfect" (or, in the vernacular, "near mint" or even "very fine", they still sell.
As for a sex-mobile, I don't really know - it just came to me. I'm assuming it is a vehicle whose primary purpose is sex-related. Anyone got a better definition?
And Dougie - you're wussing out by not posting your thoughts just because of some familial relation! It sure doesn't seem to inhibit my wife!
Please explain "J-Pop" for those not in the "know"...
Raza - fair enough. Most people feel that way, I believe.
Re: J-pop - is it techno-ey? trancey? closest analogy to A-pop?
I think J-Pop is just the term used in America to define modern Japanese music. Seeing as how "pop" is supposed to be short for "popular," I would assume that it's just popular Japanese music. However, most of what I listen to hasn't been popular for the past 9 or 10 years or so. I've got some CDs if you want to listen, Gregg.
I would like to listen to a couple that you consider the MOST "catchy" / "hooky" / etc. - the ones you think are the most enjoyable to listen to. I love pop music from every era, whether it be Guy Lombardo or Backstreet Boys. In my opinion, there's usually a reason why it's popular - often because it's good! Cindy will disagree, however; in her opinion, if the masses like it, it's usually crap. Right dear?
What a GREAT post that was! Gregg, you've set a high bar for yourself.
Cindy, warm up the sex-mobile. I will be over with my helmet on ready to ROLL, darlin'.
You realize, Gregg, that people are going to want more content after this raging success?
beat ya to it, Raza - was in fact posting while you commented.
What's your blog, and how can I add it to mine - the way that Doug and Scott have them listed along the side of theirs?
You have to modify the HTML in the blog template. I'll show you how to do that on Sunday, I guess. Raza's blog is http://shallowbutdeep.blogspot.com. MJ can be found at http://mjdirect.blogspot.com, t is at http://scrapethewindows.blogspot.com, and I don't know anything about Kelley other than the blog address: http://wonderingsfromthewack.blogspot.com.
